Video klip tersebut disutradarai oleh Kygo dan Selena Gomez yang berkolaborasi dengan Phillip Lopez.

Menurut Lauv lagu ini punya makna tersendiri untuknya.

Lagu ini dia buat untuk penggemarnya.

"Aku memulai membuat lagu Mean It ketika aku menginginkan seseorang untuk jujur padaku (Aku tidak sempurna dan aku meyakini itu)," ucap Lauv dikutip dari variancemagazine.com.

Lauv juga mengaku ingin berkolaborasi dengan Paul (vokalis LANY) sejak lama.

Kemudian mereka berbalas pesan dan akhirnya menyetujui ide untuk membuat lagu.
